Denim…Not the Fabric of My Life

I volunteered to help the current Director of Training & Development move some training material out of a storage closet at work. She suggested that we wear jeans instead of business clothes to move the material. As soon as I heard the word jeans I cringed. Am I the only woman who despises jeans? I have never been a fan of jeans. I find them very binding and they always ride up in inappropriate places (come on I can’t be the only person that thinks this about America’s most beloved pant). If I wear jeans I can’t sit still and I am constantly moving around trying to find a comfortable seated position. Don’t even think about wearing jeans out to dinner if you plan to actually eat. They always seem to create a muffin top once you consume the tiniest morsel of food.

I have tried so hard to become a jeans lover. Each season Express sells a new cut and I get suckered into purchasing another pair of jeans with the hope that the new pair will fit differently. I persuade myself in the dressing room that the baggy cut, slim cut, editor cut or relaxed cut contours my body and that I’ll wear the new pair all the time. Wrong! I have 8 pairs of barely worn jeans stacked in my closet (and I got rid of several pairs before the move). Among the stack are Citizens of Humanity, Sevens and skinny jeans from a designer boutique out here in So Cal. I have clearly invested both time and money in my search for the perfect jean. I am convinced it doesn’t exist.

What’s a girl to do? I have found relief in leggings. Thank you 80s for leggings (you can keep the crimped hair, acid wash jeans and obnoxious neon colored clothes)! Leggings are comfy and can be dressed up or down. My favorite combo is a sweater dress (I think I will have to pack these away out here in LA really soon…what a shame that it is getting warm), leggings and boots.

I would love to know that I am not alone. If you have been harboring bad feelings about denim let me know. It is ok to let your true feelings come out. Some of you may have been pretending to love jeans when deep down you really hate them too. It feels good to rebel against the norm!

Also, let me know if you have recovered from jeans hatred. I don’t believe a great pair exists, but since I am a shopping addict I am willing to continue the search. If you have found an amazing pair let me know. I’ll justify buying them as research for my blog.

Sjobeck Show

Last night I attended my first (and definitely not my last) fashion show. One of my friends from work invited me to join her and her girlfriends at the show, and there was no way I was turning down this invite. The girls went to college with one of Sjobeck's designers, which meant we were on a list to get into the show. We were escorted through the VIP line and I felt very important walking in front of the sponsor board. I was quickly slapped with a huge dose of reality when none of the photographers asked us to pose for a picture. Oh well! I was at a fashion show at the LA Theater. I stood in the lobby trying to take in all of the scenes. I watched the diverse crowd of people file into the venue. Everything goes at a fashion show. Some women dressed in uber-chic outfits while others dressed for the club. I even saw some guy wearing a cape and costume makeup...very random. When the staff finally opened the doors to the theater I was awestruck. The flashing lights, thumping music, crowds of people and cluster of photographers jammed into the small media area made for an intensely exciting scene. When the show started and the first model pranced down the stage I sat wide-eyed and excited like a child on Christmas who just discovered Santa's loot. There were only 5 models in the show and I could not believe how quickly they changed outfits. We saw dresses, jeans and hoodies, skirts and tops and denim vests. The line had a Native American vibe and I absolutely feel in love with one of the dresses. The entire experience fueled my desire to someday work in the fashion industry. I fell asleep last night while visions of turquoise jewels, slouchy boots and flannel print danced in my head.
