This morning I went to Starbucks to get a little pick me up before attending an all day orientation day at work. Starbucks had Café Verona, which is my favorite coffee they make (perhaps it was the luck of the Irish). I was thrilled to discover my favorite coffee this morning (St. Louis stores stopped serving Verona when the company started brewing Pike Place on a daily basis) and ordered myself a venti. An emotion passed through my body as the barista handed me my giant caffeine fix. I was extremely happy about my coffee. It became very obvious to me that I find the little things in life extremely delightful. I honestly think I am genuinely happy (to the point where people sometimes ask if I am ever not happy. It is very rare and poor Joe is usually the one who experiences me in unhappy moods. Sorry babe!) because I recognize and appreciate the little things.
I started to think about the other things today that made me happy. My bright green round-toe pumps and green scarf definitely made me happy. Given that I am quite a bit Irish, I had to wear something green for St. Patty’s Day. I spruced up a boring black suit and white shirt with my festive, vibrant accessories.
This evening after the orientation I moved out of my cubicle and into an office. I have never been so excited to have an office. I can't stop staring out my window. The view from the 34th floor in downtown LA is wicked! I feel respected and appreciated as an employee by having an office (employers take note...how you treat employees has a huge impact on their overall satisfaction with the organization). I also can't wait to decorate and add some personal flair to my new space (after all I think you spend more hours at work than you do in your own home). Definitely a little thing (some of you might argue that getting an office is more like a huge thing, but I had to stay consistent with today's theme) to be very excited about!
We get so caught up in the daily to-dos and with our commitments that we sometimes forget to appreciate the little things in life. When you truly appreciate something as small as a favorite cup of coffee or fabulous accessories, it can brighten your day. When you are happy, you pass that happiness onto others. I encourage you to think about the little things in life that make you smile, and when you are fortunate enough to experience those things truly embrace the moment.
